Beyond Pacing: 20 Crucial Discoveries That Transformed My Long COVID and PEM Recovery
A practical, experience-driven guide for anyone navigating the exhausting cycle of Long COVID, Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM), autonomic dysfunction, mast-cell flares, and the unpredictable crash-and-recovery pattern that defines this illness.

This book moves past generic pacing advice and offers something more useful: the twenty turning points that actually shifted a stalled recovery into real, measurable progress. Each discovery is drawn from lived experience, grounded in clear patterns, and translated into strategies that can be adapted to any severity level.

Inside, the book covers insights such as:

  • The signals that reveal your primary PEM mechanisms
  • How to stop following strangers' protocols and identify what truly changes your baseline
  • Why physical, cognitive, and emotional exertion all drain the same battery
  • Ways to approach histamine, circulation, and energy metabolism without overwhelm
  • How to use heart-rate data and symptom tracking to prevent delayed crashes
  • What "rescue days" and "maintenance days" look like in real life
  • The subtle habits that prolong crashes without you realizing it
  • Why recovery timelines are longand why that's not a sign of failure

Alongside the discoveries, the book explains the underlying systems affected by Long COVIDmitochondrial function, autonomic regulation, immune signaling, mast-cell activation, and blood-volume instability. Instead of theory, it focuses on what actually helped stabilize a fragile baseline and reduce the frequency and severity of PEM episodes.

This guide is ideal for readers looking for:

  • Long COVID recovery strategies
  • PEM management tools
  • Energy-budget frameworks
  • Mast-cell and autonomic dysfunction insights
  • Practical, reality-tested approaches that don't require perfection

Beyond Pacing is written for people who are tired of confusing, conflicting advice and want a structured way to understand their body's signals, avoid crashes, and build a personalized, sustainable recovery pathone careful step at a time.

Autorenporträt
Sera Haldin is a Long COVID patient and advocate who has been navigating Post-Exertional Malaise since 2023. Before becoming ill, Sera was an active professional with a career in [intentionally vague to protect privacy]. Since developing Long COVID, Sera has dedicated significant energy (within the constraints of severe limitation) to researching the condition, understanding its mechanisms, and developing practical protocols for management.
This book represents Sera's attempt to distill over a year of intensive learning, experimentation, and lived experience into a roadmap that might help others suffering from Long COVID and PEM avoid some of the confusion, wasted effort, and unnecessary suffering that characterized the early months of Sera's own journey.
Sera continues to pace carefully, advocate for better understanding of Long COVID, and work toward gradual improvement. This is Sera's first book.
