She began writing poetry when she was five years old, using first the Gothic alphabet, and then, when she was six, Latin.Ms. Uricariu's literary debut took place in 1966. It was hailed by poets in her home country and abroad, and on Radio Free Europe, as a "tragic, mature poetry, that addresses profound questions." Ştefan Baciu, the director of the Hawaiian magazine Mele, translated and published many of the adolescent writer's poems. Ms. Uricariu soon after received First Prize in the South American Literature Festival for one of her poems, which was translated into ten languages. As an adolescent, her poetry was honored with the National Student Award for Literature, and the Nicolae Labiş National Award for Poetry.
