4 Daniel is a trilogy which recounts the historical, cultural and political events related to the lost states of central and southern Africa. It is a unique blend of hard scientific evidence intermingled with my own anecdotal accounts and personal experiences. It is a legacy for my son Daniel, who grew up in Germany and has little knowledge of my country of birth. It is also a catalyst which should stimulate a vibrant debate on 'God's Own Country' a phrase repeatedly heard in the 1970s, in spite of a raging Bush War. Book One describes a rich cultural heritage of a region with so many UNESCO World Heritage sites, whose origins have often been deliberately distorted. In the absence of extensive written documentation, the narrative necessarily relies on other bodies of evidence including archaeological sources and the oral traditions of the indigenous people. It portrays the pivotal role played by the ancient Swahili ivory and gold traders in shaping the social landscape of the Shona dynasties in the region, including my own Sanyanga clan. It describes the competition for gold between the Portuguese conquistadors and the Swahili traders, and how the former became the first Europeans to try and settle in the region. Book One describes some of the challenges they faced, including those brought about by the great upheaval which became to be known as the 'Mfecane' as well as those brought about by the European 'Scramble for Africa'. The first volume concludes with a description of the resistance to the advent of British colonialism and the final chapter reveals some of the events which led to the collapse and disappearance of the ancient African kingdoms in the region. The second volume is mainly concerned with events which occurred between 1890 and 1980. This Rhodesian era saw the beginning of colonialism with the introduction of British South Africa Company (BSAC) rule and Book Two narrates the impact that this had on the hapless indigenous population. BSAC rule ended in 1923, when the territory of Southern Rhodesia was granted a quasi Imperial Dominion status by the British Colonial Office. The consequences of these policies are discussed and how they eventually led to the formation of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Book Two outlines how the Federation transformed into the legally controversial Republic of Rhodesia, and how this in turn led to the short lived and ill fated Zimbabwe-Rhodesia Republic. The final volume of this trilogy is focused mainly around the economic, political and social events facing the long suffering people in a post colonial Zimbabwe.
