Hank Meredith (1918-1994) worked as a cowpuncher on cattle ranches and roundups in the Four Corners states (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah) on and off between 1945 and 1985, following his tour of duty as a cavalry soldier in the US Army during World War II. As an accomplished cornetist in school bands and as a chorister in school choral groups, Hank's innate musicianship is evident in these, his favourite songs of the cowboy. Using his vast repertoire, he took great pleasure in singing a variety of songs of all types, which were enjoyed by everyone within earshot. Learning how to play the cornet from his father, Henry Meredith, Jr. went on to graduate with four degrees in music, majoring in trumpet, music history, and education. A noted performer on historic and modern brass instruments, a well-known band conductor and collector of antique musical instruments, as well as an award-winning university music professor, Henry Meredith always enjoyed his dad's singing and wanted to preserve his singular voice for years to come. The recordings that Hank Jr. made of Hank Sr. singing 29 cowboy songs in 1968 have spawned this compendium for musicians of all levels, as well as for scholars, teachers, and historians.
