Congressional reforms in subsequent years including the landmark 1986 Goldwater-Nichols Act strengthened the authority and position of the Chairman and Joint Staff, the fruits of which were realized in US armed operations from DESERT STORM to IRAQI FREEDOM where joint warfighting crystallized.
