KurztextTranslations and adaptations of East Africanfolktales have been widely available and onlyrecently recognized as constituting an essentialcomponent of the global cultural heritage. However, little is understood about their nature, taxonomy, creation, and dissemination. This monograph focuseson a selected sample of East African folktales ofvarious ethnicities, examining the prevalent patternsin their adaptation from different forms ofexpression since the 1970s to the postmodern eras, and tracing them to their sources and creators. Thebook draws from a range of backgrounds including thework of specialists in children's literature, historians, folklorists, literary artists, anthropologists, to which I add my personalexperience. These varied vistas advance theunderstanding of the ways in which the social, cultural, and political circumstances have influencedthe creation, collection, and dissemination offolktales from this rich and diverse cultural region.I expect that this analysis will stimulatediscussions and inspire further research in thisarea.
