Carl Gustaf Grimberg, född 22 september 1875 i Göteborg, var historiker, lärare och förlagsman. Han blev filosofie doktor vid Göteborgs högskola 1903 med avhandlingen "De diplomatiska förbindelserna mellan Sverige och Preussen 1804-1808". Han gillade idrott och lade ned mycket tid på segling, ritt och fjällvandring. Grimberg arbetade som lärare, docent i historia och lektor vid Uppsala Universitet. Hans lektioner kännetecknades av närmast teatraliska föreläsningar där Sveriges historia levandegjordes inför fängslade elever som lyssnade med stor entusiasm. Vid tiden då Carl Grimberg skrev "Svenska folkets underbara öden" var han chef för P.A. Norstedt & Söners litterära avdelning. Verket gjorde honom både känd och folkkär. Av de mängder entusiastiska brev som han lämnade etter sig, skrivna av hängivna läsare, framträder bland annat prins Eugen, Knut Agathon Wallenberg och Sven Hedin. Men Grimbergs historieskrivning ådrog sig även kritik. Kanske inte så mycket från allmänheten, men däremot från politiskt håll då den svenska vänstern ansåg att den var för "nationalistiskt" och "krigsförhärligande". I spetsen för kritikerna stod Socialdemokraternas dåvarande ledare Hjalmar Branting.
