The 9th Illinois Infantry began the Civil War as a three months' enlistment unit in April 1861. Upon the expiration of that term, it reenlisted for a three year enlistment. The 9th saw heavy fighting in the February 1862 capture of Fort Donelson, Tennessee; then at Shiloh. It continued the war involved in most of the major battles in the west, ending the war in North Carolina. The regiment lost during service 5 Officers and 211 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 200 Enlisted men by disease. Total 417. This history was written by the Chaplain. It is unusual among regimental histories in that it lists the names of most of the men wounded and captured in each battle.
