Although the story unfolds in order, I like to give myself permission to be guided on which chapter to read next. Doing this, I find that I have benefited greatly, as Spirit/Debra showed me something I hadn't understood before, and perhaps was the catalyst for my expansion and deep inner soul work. Author Debra Williams was groomed from childhood by her grandmother to be the family historian. She gathered personal histories as far back as the mid-1600s and then, in her 60s, compiled them for the family. In doing so, patterns emerged. Patterns of not only herself but both of her parents, their parents, and their parents, and so on. Each crossed unaccepted cultural boundaries of their respective time, namely among so many other things, intermarriages. Those who have experienced intermarriages know of the struggle it can be for them and their children. Debra found that depth of determination, love, strength, and openness in her direct family line intriguing. Her quest to process and write about her journey resulted in a vulnerable and profoundly intimate story with an absorbing inner standing of our complexities.
