Dr. el-Guebaly is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary. He has presided over several associations, including the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine. He was the founding President of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM), which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023. Dr. el-Guebaly has contributed valuable knowledge in the emerging field of addiction medicine for over six decades; he has published over 280 peer-reviewed papers and spoken before hundreds of international audiences. He edited both editions of the ISAM's Textbook of Addiction Treatment: International Perspectives and has long served as the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Addiction.
