Come 1958, closing in on the peak of their young, beautiful powers, it is hard to imagine life could have been any better for the team known throughout every household across Great Britain, as the Busby Babes. Matt Busby's Manchester United had unknowingly crossed that invisible boundary from being a mere First Division football team, into superstars off it. Nobody performed like the Mancunian Red Devils, those far off days of the lethal, soaked, leather footballs smashed at ferocious speeds by the likes of Taylor, Edwards Viollet and Charlton into the roof of the net, with such speed and power, the goalkeeper, unless thinking he was Superman, simply never had a chance. Alas, the world would in such a short time mourn them for the hellish concoction of hellish fire, blood, snow, ice and Munich dawned. At that time, Manchester United belonged not just to Manchester, but to the entire nation. Seen only in scattered black and white snatches on Pathe newsreels, or when they played at opponent's ground-imagine the Big Top Circus coming to town. Or a Hollywood movie having its opening Premier at your local Odeon and all the stars attending. They promised hope-they put smiles on people's faces in true hard times. A new way forward. There was something, breathtakingly and completely unorthodox about how the reds set about opposing teams. Nowhere more so was this on display than a winter's day in North London, 1 February 1958.
