James Charles Louis Gilson (1878-1943), also known as Captain Charles Gilson, Major Charles Gilson, and Barbara Gilson, was a prominent British officer and author of science fiction, adventure novels, and historical fiction books for children. Some of his stories were illustrated, including at least one book, Arthur E. Becher's The Refugee; the Strange Story of Nether Hall. Cyrus Cuneo illustrated his writing as well. His novels contained pieces about the Upper Congo's Pygmies. He also depicted adventures during the Boxer Rebellion. Some of his pieces were published in periodicals as serials. Many of his stories can be found online at sites like Project Gutenberg. Gilson served in China following the Boxer Rebellion and included the country in some of his novels. Gilson wrote a story about a Chinese investigator. He created young adult novels and was acclaimed for his "wide knowledge of the world" in his depictions. His stories have also appeared in youth periodicals such as The Captain and St. Nicholas Magazine. Another of his works depicted Jerry Abershaw's exploits. He also wrote a story about Robin Hood.
