Expand your body and your ego will follow? The present research aimed to demonstrate that adopting expansive, open body postures improves women's attitudes towards their own abilities and characteristics. For this purpose, 72 female participants between 18 and 39 years adopted either expansive or contractive, closed poses for two minutes and had their levels of general and social self-efficacy, as well as their self-esteem assessed - both before and after.This study was the first to experimentally investigate posture manipulation effects on self-efficacy beliefs. The results suggest that expansive posing can be a powerful tool to strengthen people's readiness to face uncomfortable situations of social interaction.
