Researchers over the world have investigated therelationship between field dependence-independenceand sport-related settings (sports selection, sportsperformance, motor learning, and physical education)for almost 50 years. Field-dependent (FD)individuals, compared with field-independent (FI)individuals, are constantly found to demonstrate lessadvantage and poorer performance in thesesport-related settings. As a result, concerns arisethat FD adolescents might also experience lower levelof physical activity, which could result in a higherrisk of developing obesity and related diseases, thantheir FI counterpart. This book provides new researchresults supporting the concern. Specifically, compared with FI adolescents, FD adolescents have asignificantly lower level of physical activity, aremuch less likely to participate in organized sports, and tend to engage in physical activities that areless related to sports, thus expending less energy. The book adds new findings to the body of knowledgeand is useful to professionals in the field ofadolescents' physical activity promotion andintervention.
