The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are 2 billion people worldwide who consume alcoholic beverages and that 76.3 million have problems linked to alcohol consumption (WHO, 2002). Although there has been a reduction in alcohol consumption over the years, Portugal is among the ten European countries that consume the most alcohol per person, and is above the European average (WHO, 2014). It is estimated that there are around seven hundred and forty thousand people who consume alcohol to excess and five hundred thousand who are dependent on alcoholic beverages (WHO, 2005). Understanding the factors that may contribute to alcohol consumption is an important area of research. Psychological factors include personality and emotional regulation. A better understanding of the relationship between Emotional Regulation difficulties and Personality traits in alcohol consumption could be useful for intervening to prevent and change this behavior.
