Jana Fawaz Elhassan is an award-winning novelist and short story writer from Lebanon. She has worked as a journalist for leading newspapers and TV since 2008. In November 2015, she was featured in the BBC 100 Women Season, an annual two-week season that features inspiring women from around the world. Her first novel won Lebanon’s Simon Hayek Award and her second and third novels (Me, She, and the Other Woman and The Ninety-Ninth Floor) were shortlisted for the International Prize of Arabic Fiction. This is her second novel to be translated into English. Michelle Hartman is a literary translator and professor of Arabic literature at McGill University. She has translated more than a dozen novels from Arabic to English including three other novels by Iman Humaydan, The Weight of Paradise, Other Lives, and Wild Mulberries. Her latest translation is A Long Walk from Gaza (Interlink, 2024). She has also written on Lebanese women and the Civil War in two co-authored volumes (with Malek Abisaab), Women’s War Stories: The Lebanese Civil War, Women’s Labor and the Creative Arts (Syracuse UP, 2022) and What the War Left Behind: Women’s Stories of Resistance and Struggle in Lebanon (Syracuse UP, 2024).
