From her early childhood in New Zealand and Fiji, she followed her first husband to Hawaii, Iraq, Sudan, Vietnam and Jordan. When her young daughter became seriously ill, she left for London and began life on her own, overcoming alcoholism and depression to find a new happiness within a second marriage. She became an American citizen in 1997 and after the death of her husband, moved from Santa Barbara, California to the Ojai Valley and then to Colorado to be close to her son and grandchildren. Now retired in Albuquerque, New Mexico she enjoys writing and the company of her two small dogs. From her early childhood in New Zealand and Fiji, Susan Broidy packed and followed her first husband to Hawaii, Iraq, Sudan, Vietnam and Jordan. Working when she could as a journalist and teacher, she left for London in 1976 when her young daughter became seriously ill and began a new life on her own. Overcoming depression and alcoholism, she found a new happiness in her second marriage, and returned to university, earning two Masters degrees in English and International Relations. Her interest in politics led to her being a parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats in the election of 1992. On her husband's retirement they moved to Santa Barbara, California until his death in 1997. The author continued her interest in Democratic politics in the Ojai Valley and then in Longmont, Colorado until her retirement in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she carries on writing, to achieve an examined life, "the only life worth living."
