Circumstantial evidence indicates that Evan Humphreys (Humphry, Humphrey) appears to be the progenitor of the Humphries family of Brunswick County, Virginia; however, "the author has made John and Charles, sons of Charles and Mary Humphries, the first generation." John (born 27 December 1749, died 19 January 1815) and Charles (born about 1762, died 1837) are the first generation to have children born in South Carolina. "Although not a pioneer family of Union County, South Carolina, (moving there after the Revolutionary War), the Humphries family has made a significant contribution to the history and development of that county. Members of the Humphries family have been ministers, doctors, county officials, and have been active in church and civic affairs. The names of Rev. Thomas Young, Billy Humphries, Dr. Christopher Young, and "Polly" Young are still familiar to many Union County residents. Hardly a child in the school system of Union in the twentieth century exists who has not been taught by a member of this family." "The format of this volume is roughly that of the New England Register Method." Chapters include Ancestors of Charles Humphries (d. 1837) followed by chapters for the first through ninth generations, and "Uncle Dan" Humphries. Photographs and a full-name index add to the value of this work.
