William Garrott Brown (1868-1913) was a historian and essayist best known for his essay collection titled The Lower South in American History, and also for his short biographies of Stephen Douglas and Andrew Jackson. Born the youngest of eight children in Alabama in 1868, Brown entered Harvard University in 1889 and received a master's degree in history in 1892. While serving as Deputy Keeper of University Records and as a lecturer in the History Department, Brown produced seven books from 1900-1905. Plagued by ill health, he died of complications from tuberculosis in 1913.
