Andrew Murray was born on May 9, 1828, in Graaff-Reinet, Cape Town, South Africa. His father was a minister associated with the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. As a child, he witnessed his father's fervent prayers for revival, frequently reading stories of revivals of the Holy Spirit to his family. His prayers were answered in 1861 when a powerful spiritual movement swept through his congregation. Young Murray grew up delighting in the Word of God. He became a preacher at 17 and was ordained to the ministry in the Dutch Reformed Church when he was only 20. His ministry was so spiritually blessed that he quickly gained notoriety and rose to positions of responsibility and leadership. A fervent evangelist, he dedicated his entire life to reaching the most forgotten populations, such as the African tribes of the interior. On more than one occasion, he risked his life to spread the Christian message. The author of more than 250 books, he emphasized complete and absolute consecration to God, prayer, and holiness. Readers will find these themes interwoven in many of the meditations in this collection. During the last 28 years of his life, he was considered the father of the Keswick Movement in South Africa.

His father was a minister associated with the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, which also maintained close ties to the Dutch Reformed Church, which he helped revitalize with his ardent Scottish Christian spirit. This unique man spent his Friday evenings praying for a spiritual revival in South Africa. His parents sent him to study in his native Scotland at the University of Aberdeen. He also studied at the University of Utrecht (Netherlands), where, at the age of 16, he experienced the new birth. In 1848, he was ordained to the ministry of the Dutch Reformed Church, when he was only 20 years old. He pastored various South African churches in Bloemfontein (1850-60), Worcester (1860-64), Cape Town (1864-71), and Wellington (1871-1906). Suffering from a throat infection in 1879, he lost his voice for almost two years, from which he was healed at the Bethsham home in London. Following this experience, he believed that, according to the Bible, the miraculous gifts of the Spirit were not limited solely to the early Church. Like other teachers of holiness and victorious living, he referred to the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a post-regeneration experience. For him, the way one is baptized can be very different: a joyful renewal of faith, a special spiritual sensitivity, a deep and quiet perception of God, or an intense devotion to the Lord. He departed for his heavenly homeland a few months before his 89th birthday, on January 18, 1917.
