When Abby Winslow and Celeste Donahue hear about the need for medical missionaries with the China Inland Mission they make a promise to each other to prepare themselves to go serve Christ in China. From London they planned to strike out towards China but World War II was upsetting everything. With medical missionary dreams dimming, they are told about the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky needing women such as themselves, however further midwifery training would be required. With dreams dashed, plans amended and travel destinations drastically altered, they find themselves back in the USA where they are certain their calling as medical missionaries will be squandered. What they find however, in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky, are people as steeped in superstitions, dark religions, and severe distrust of strangers hoping to do good, as they would find in China. The Lord has many lessons for these two as they detour from their original desire and concept of what it means to serve God "Over There." When Celeste is kidnapped and almost killed and Abby, charged with murder, can they still believe that God is in control?
