Five hundred years ago, as Europeans began arriving in America, a young brother and sister duo led the prosperous and powerful Calusa tribe of Southwestern Florida. He was named Carlos, and she was named Antonia. Spaniards rescued from shipwrecks also lived among the Calusa. One thirteen-year-old boy later wrote about this exceptional tribe. Many events in this story are real.

Autorenporträt
Hope Lindsay found herself in Florida for high school. There, she first wanted to be a writer. It's no coincidence that she wished to write for readers of the same age. Eventually, She moved up to South Dakota. She lived on a Sioux Reservation for a year, fighting poverty and volunteering for the good of the Native Americans living there, and playing cards and hiking with teenagers who were supposed to be doing their homework. She went back to school in California, got her masters in Medical Social Work, and worked on various cases, including adoptions, survivors of domestic abuse, and hospice care. Hope also ran triathlons when she moved back to California. Now, she lives in Vermont. She can be reached at @holivaca.bsky.social.-Interview by Francesca E.
