At the Mountains of Madness is a science fiction-horror novella by American author H. P. Lovecraft, written in February/March 1931 and rejected that year by Weird Tales editor Farnsworth Wright on the grounds of its length. It was originally serialized in the February, March, and April 1936 issues of Astounding Stories. It has been reproduced in numerous collections. The story details the events of a disastrous expedition to the Antarctic continent in September 1930, and what was found there by a group of explorers led by the narrator, Dr. William Dyer of Miskatonic University. Throughout the story, Dyer details a series of previously untold events in the hope of deterring another group of explorers who wish to return to the continent. These events include the discovery of an ancient civilization older than the human race, and realization of earth's past told through various sculptures and murals. (wikipedia.org)
Autorenporträt
Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an influential American writer known for his works in weird fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Born on August 20, 1890, in Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft spent most of his life in New England, where he developed his distinctive style that blended cosmic horror with a sense of the unknown and unfathomable. He is best known for creating the Cthulhu Mythos, a shared universe of cosmic deities, strange creatures, and forbidden knowledge. His work often explored the insignificance of humanity in the grand scheme of the universe, leaving readers with a sense of dread and existential fear. Lovecraft s writing has had a lasting impact on the horror genre and continues to inspire writers and filmmakers today. He married Sonia Greene in 1924, and their partnership lasted until his death on March 15, 1937, at the age of 46. Despite his relatively short life, Lovecraft s work continues to be celebrated for its innovative storytelling and lasting influence on the horror genre.
