Touching on themes of love, loss, addiction, and other life experiences, author Ciara Dove invites readers to laugh, cry, smile, and be empowered to craft their own art by sharing her creative process for each poem. While many love reading poems, few truly understand what it takes to write one. Even great poets write and rewrite their work, scratching lines or starting over entirely until they've produced art they love-art they hope the world loves too. By the time they make it to print, some poems have gone through many iterations the reader never gets to see, since only the finished piece is printed. Authentic: Poetry in the Raw brings readers into the striking imperfection of the poetry-writing process by including images of the original handwritten poems alongside a clean, easy-to-enjoy print version. It spans a variety of poetic forms, from free verse and rhyme to acrostic, making it appealing to a wide audience.
