It is endemic to the wet coastal forests of the Pacific Northwest, extending from northern California, through Washington and British Columbia to southern Alaska. The wingspan is about 33 mm. Adults are on wing in midsummer. The larvae feed on Alnus species. A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order; there are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth (about ten times the number of species of butterfly), with thousands of species yet to be described. Most species of moth are nocturnal, but there are crepuscular and diurnal species.
