This book documents the travels of Baron Carl Johan Klinkowstrom, a Swedish diplomat who spent two years in the United States from 1818 to 1820. Through extensive research in archives and contemporary sources, historian Franklin D. Scott reconstructs Klinkowstrom's journey, which took him from New York to New Orleans and beyond. Along the way, Klinkowstrom encountered a diverse cast of characters, including politicians, artists, and ordinary Americans. Scott's book offers a richly detailed portrait of early 19th-century America, as seen through the eyes of a European observer. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
