Dance was established as an art form through classical ballet in the 17th century, but it was after the development of modern dance in the mid-20th century that contemporary dance emerged. Given the years of existence of ballet and the maturing of contemporary dance, this research investigated the reasons for the public's preference for classical ballet in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The study of the history of dance was used to prove this, since going to the Municipal Theater still represents a social status conquered by society. Bourdieu indicated that taste is a choice of preferences, but not inherent to the social group in which one is inserted. Surveys carried out with market professionals indicated perceptions and opinions about the scarce audience for contemporary dance. In this way, we have seen that the solution to equalizing the audiences of both modalities is to take several paths, but that the main one is to educate the public through debates about the contemporary dance shows presented.
