Sangre en Ecuador es su primer misterio. Se inspiró en su viaje de vacaciones por Ecuador, visitando todos los lugares incluidos en la historia. También formó parte de un grupo de turistas corredores, exactamente como se describe en la historia.Antes de escribir ficción, disfrutó de una carrera variada en atención médica, gobierno y defensa nacional. Durante diez años, fue un destacado investigador de cirugía robótica, publicando sus resultados en revistas médicas y hablando en conferencias quirúrgicas. Pasó cuatro años en el servicio gubernamental civil, liderando la innovación tecnológica para todos los sistemas de simulación del Ejército de EE. UU. Antes de eso, fue vicepresidente de varias empresas de software de defensa.El Dr. Smith ha recibido múltiples premios por sus innovaciones en educación de cirugía robótica, simulación de entrenamiento y desarrollo de sistemas de software.
