Bismuthides are compounds of Bi with more electropositive elements. They represent a class of inorganic compounds with complex chemical and physical properties. Bismuthides of rare earth (RE) elements have been insufficiently studied up to now. The interest in these compounds the discovery of high - temperature superconductivity, hightemperature thermoelectric materials. The RE-Bi systems have been extensively investigated due to their interesting magnetic and electronic properties. The various phases include the RE5Bi3, RE4Bi3, REBi, RE11Bi10. Some of the rare earth pnictides show anomalous magnetic and electronic behavior. These include mixed anti-ferromagnetism for CePn (Pn-As, Sb, Bi), meta-magnetism for NdPn and anti-ferromagnetism for Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er mono-pnictides. In the anti-Th3P4 structure type properties range from superconducting for La4As3 to antiferromagnetic for Eu4Bi3 and to ferromagnetic for RE4Sb3, RE4Bi3. High-temperature thermoelectric materials are becoming increasingly useful for applications such as power generation of deep space probes, sea buoys and remote telecommunications.
