John J. Hohn grew up in Yankton, South Dakota, the last upstream steamboat stop on the Missouri River. His family is intimately tied to the history of South Dakota. His grandfather homesteaded north and west of Yankton, staking out 360 acres that remain in John's family today.John has been interested in the arts his entire life, first publishing at age ten in the nationally circulated "Pilot" magazine. In 1972, he was instrumental in combining the student symphonies of Minneapolis and St. Paul in the founding of the Student Symphonies of the Great Twin Cities area. In 2016, he co-founded 40+ Stage Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.John graduated from Yankton High School, turned down a Navy ROTC scholarship to marry his high school sweetheart, and earned a degree in English from St. John's University in Minnesota. Upon graduating, he taught at St. John's Prep School before beginning a forty-year career in the financial services industry.John and his wife Melinda divide their time each year between their cottage near West Jefferson, North Carolina, and a home in Winston-Salem, where they spend the winter months. He has six wonderful children, five boys and a girl. He is proud of each one of them and grateful for their friendship and love.
