Brian G. Shellum follows the experiences of Captain Charles Young and the Ninth Cavalry in California, from life at the Presidio of San Francisco to summers patrolling Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks to missions training with the California National Guard.
Brian G. Shellum is a retired army officer who was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal and the Order of St. George, former government historian at the Defense Intelligence Agency, and retired intelligence officer with the Department of Defense. He is the author of Black Cadet in a White Bastion: Charles Young at West Point (Nebraska, 2006), Black Officer in a Buffalo Soldier Regiment: The Military Career of Charles Young (Nebraska, 2010), and Buffalo Soldiers in Alaska: Company L, Twenty-Fourth Infantry (Nebraska, 2021).
