Is your child anxious about death or those around them dying? Then you want to hear more about this book. But What If They Die? is a story about Leo, whose mind is spiralling with anxious thoughts that are keeping him awake. He's worried about his parents dying. Thankfully, his bunny Lola is there to help him with some helpful and funny suggestions. This illustrated children's book is for highly aware and sensitive children with a big imagination, who are also particularly curious and at times anxious about death and dying. It celebrates feeling all the emotions no matter how uncomfortable they are, without trying to fix or avoid them. But What If They Die? is a book for children who are five years old and beyond. However, it is also a book for adults - parents, carers, therapists, school teachers - as it invites them to navigate this or similar situations by opening up what could feel like daunting conversations in an accessible, fun, mindful, and age-appropriate way.
As a mother of two, Jimena has been driven to learn more about how to respond to highly sensitive children in ways that are helpful, gentle and respectful. When her son started to display signs of anxiety around the topic of death, Jimena - a true believer in letting children express their emotions and vulnerability - decided to write a story that could support him in that struggle. Writing 'But What If They Die?' felt like a return home for Jimena, years after having graduated with a Masters in Philosophy of Education at the Institute of Education (IoE) in London, focusing on this topic from an educational and philosophical perspective. She describes the birth of this picture book as the first culmination of many years of growing up in Mexico, studying the topic of death at university, working as an artist, and being a mum. Jimena believes that even though this story is aimed at children (5+), it is also for any parent, carer, or teacher open and willing to engage in deep and honest conversations with any young people in their care.
