During the centuries that followed the disappearance of the Roman Empire, it came up a complex period of political fragmentation. During the 5th to 11th centuries, the fall and rise of new kingdoms in the Western Mediterranean needed varied legitimation mechanisms to establish their dominance over other communities. For it, they argued different strategies adapted to the necessity of each geographical and territorial realities with the purpose of present the diverse rulers as heirs of an ancient order, within a teleological and providential conception of History.
