I grew up in the aftermath of the great depression in the rural area of north Florida. God blessed me with loving parents that instilled in me the values of honesty and kindness to others. They both came from large families that were survivors of the depression. It was their examples of pride, hard work, and ability to find a way to get the job done that got me through my difficulties in life. God blessed me with the opportunities I needed, and my parents gave me the wisdom to use them. It was those wonderful people who helped me along the way that inspired me to write this book about my life. When we grow old, we discover that good memories and old friends are our most valuable assets. They have a lot in common, they will be there to pick you up when you're down. That warm happy feeling you get from seeing, hearing from, or thinking about an old friend comes from the memories you have created together. The way your old friend's smile would light up the room he was in, a good memory will warm up your heart. Good memories should always make you feel better, and I like to think of them as successful. That is why I like to caress and enjoy them. Bad memories will try to pull you down and I liked to think of them as unsuccessful and they should be avoided. Things that you consider unsuccessful, you try to forget.
Autorenporträt
I was born in January 1936 in a farmhouse near Baxley, Georgia-fifteen minutes before the doctor arrived. My father always joked that it was the only time in my life I was ever in a hurry.Growing up in the rural South, survival depended on hard work, resourcefulness, and an unshakable sense of responsibility. My parents, shaped by the hardships of the Great Depression, taught me that honesty and dependability were the keys to making a life, no matter the circumstances. On a farm, help was scarce, and solutions had to be found with whatever was available. That mindset stayed with me throughout my life.At 16, I left home, found a job the same day, and remained employed until my second retirement in 1994. My journey led me through military service, where I received technical training, traveled the world, and discovered a love for country music. In Japan during the 1960s, I had the chance to work alongside some of the genre's biggest stars-an experience that deepened my passion for music, which remains with me today.Law enforcement became another pivotal chapter in my life, providing me with education, leadership opportunities, and an introduction to computer technology. That knowledge played a key role in my election as the mayor of High Springs, Florida, during the Y2K era. While serving in public office, I revived my love for music, forming a band that performed for seniors for 15 years. I also spent time as a country music disc jockey, a role I continued until my retirement in 2023 at the age of 87.Now, in my later years, I have embraced writing, reflecting on a lifetime of experiences in my book, Caressing Old Memories. Life has taught me that good friends and cherished memories are among our greatest treasures-always there to lift us up when we need them most.
