What if you didn't know what you looked like until you were all grown up? How would it feel to be part of a world where every next moment is a surprise waiting to happen to you? Follow the adventures of six carrots after they are pulled out of the ground. Watch their encounters with the sharp blades of a sorting machine, an evil beet rat king, and sneaky sugar. See how one carrot gets mixed up with the wrong crowd of cunning chemicals. Find out what it's like to be eaten by a human who laughs at tornados. Despite these dramas, the carrots become part of something bigger and far more beautiful than they ever imagined possible. With help from friendly fungi and other micro-organisms, they transform into swirling, branching, floating forms of life, as well as one champion runner.
Janis B. Nuckolls, PhD, is a linguist who has received research grants and a teaching award for her work on the Kichwa language spoken in Amazonian Ecuador. She has published academic books and articles on unique Kichwa words which give a special energy and power to people who use them. This is her first book about the lives of carrots. She loves eating and growing vegetables of all kinds, and especially enjoys their unusual shapes, which are not often seen in grocery stores. She and her husband, Steve Zuckerman, are neighbors with cows, horses, goats, llamas, emus, peacocks, and lots of geese who live on a farm next door. They are currently getting ready to launch a non-profit for indigenous people in Ecuador.
