After his father died when he was six-years-old, James Agee moved with his mother to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he enrolled in an Episcopalian boarding school. There he started up a friendship with the pastor James Harold Flye, with whom he maintained a long epistolary friendship until the day of Agee's premature death. These collected letters, that slip between personal to historical chronicles, offer a magnificent portrait of a great writer, his rich inner life, and the dreams and ambitions of youth.
