A vivid doorway into the societies of the subcontinent, Castes And Tribes Of Southern India (Volume VI, To Z) opens a window on a world where everyday life, ritual, and social order intertwine with the currents of history. This volume stands as a landmark in ethnographic study and anthropological monograph, offering a meticulous regional ethnography of the southern india locale. Thurston crafts a rich tapestry of caste relations south india, tribal practices and beliefs, and the social hierarchy and ritual that scaffold communities across diverse zones. The prose blends scholarly exactitude with humanely observed detail, inviting both the curious reader and the professional scholar to see past surfaces into lived experience. It is a work of enduring scholarly reference use, valued in academic libraries and among serious collectors for its method, depth, and context within the colonial india era. Today, Alpha Editions presents this volume not as a mere reprint, but a carefully restored relic for contemporary readers. It is more than historical record; it is a cultural treasure, preserving voices, practices, and landscapes that shaped a nation's social fabric. The book will engage casual readers drawn to anthropological narratives and transform classic-literature collection into a living conversation with the past. For connoisseurs of edgar thurston ethnography and for those seeking rigorous, authoritative insights into south indian ethnographies, this is a distinguished, indispensable addition.
Autorenporträt
Edgar Thurston was a British scholar and colonial administrator born in 1855 in London. He served as the Superintendent at the Madras Government Museum from 1885 to 1908. During his tenure, Thurston made significant contributions to the fields of zoology, ethnology, and botany in India. His extensive research focused on the study of the diverse communities in Southern India, particularly the castes and tribes of the Madras Presidency. He played a crucial role in documenting the cultural practices, social structures, and physical traits of over 300 different communities, providing invaluable ethnographic data. His research was conducted at the Madras Government Museum, where he also published many of his findings. Thurston's works were instrumental in preserving the rich cultural heritage of India, especially at a time when modernization threatened to alter traditional lifestyles. After his retirement, he continued his research and writing, leaving behind a legacy of academic contributions that provided a comprehensive understanding of Indian society during the British colonial period. He passed away in 1935 at the age of 80 in Penzance, United Kingdom. His studies remain an important reference for those interested in Indian anthropology and ethnography.
