This book explores the contradictions within capitalism as well as the reasons why Marxism hasn't been able to mount a sustained challenge. It analyses both capitalist and Marxist crisis and presents a perspective by which theory and practice might again be united in a period of increasing capitalist globalisation and crisis.

William Briggs first became involved in the socialist movement in 1971. His time as a communist, as a Marxist-Leninist has spanned many decades. They have been years of struggle, of setbacks, of betrayals. He grew and developed in the movement alongside many fine men and women whose selflessness and commitment inspired him and inspire him still. In the early 1980s he joined the Socialist Party of Australia, since re-badged as the Communist Party of Australia. He served the Party as a journalist, both in Sydney and for three years in the Soviet Union. He is the last Australian communist to have lived and worked in Moscow. This book is both a personal reflection of life as a Marxist and an observation of the history of the communist movement in Australia since the early 1970s.
