Languages with obligatory classifiers do not have articles dedicated for definiteness/indefiniteness and vice versa. In this book, the status of classifiers is explored and the interaction between the use of classifiers and the lack of definite/indefinite articles is the object of investigation with data drawn mainly from Thai. The author proposes that languages make use of classifiers with all nouns if their nouns are kind-terms. Those without obligatory classifiers do not do so because nouns are properties rather than kinds.
