This is a well-paced story of life and hope after loss and despair. George Morton was an ordinary man living an ordinary life-until everything was taken from him. After his wife, Aimee, is killed by a drunk driver, George's grief is compounded when he is accused of stealing five million pounds in a devastating cybercrime. With his reputation destroyed and nothing left for him in England, George flees to a quiet village in northern Spain, buying an old farmhouse despite the concerns of his three children-Alex, Bonnie, and Christopher. In the warmth of village life, George begins to rediscover himself through good food, world music, and unexpected friendships. He is drawn to Maria, a woman yearning for a new beginning of her own, and forced to contend with her fiercely protective father, Vincente. For the first time in years, hope seems possible. But the past refuses to stay buried. Oliver Barnes, the powerful CEO of Barnes & Barnes International Bankers, is convinced George has the missing money-and he is determined to reclaim it at any cost. As danger closes in and love offers a second chance, George must decide how far he is willing to go to protect the life he has rebuilt. Set against the vibrant backdrop of northern Spain, this is a compelling story of loss, love, and redemption, building toward a dramatic climax on Columbus Day-when everything George has fought for is put to the ultimate test.
I started writing my first novel, Columbus Day, six years ago, with the insane idea of supplementing my pension. I now know that was a pipe-dream, but I have learnt a lot along the way on this rocky road called publishing. I live with my wife Carol, in Surrey, England, and we have two wonderful daughters, Nicole and Lindsay and two gorgeous granddaughters. My interests include, photography, cooking, fishing, travelling and of course world music. Music is a key factor in Columbus Day, and I have tried to put over a point of view that there are many forms of music to enjoy - not just 'mainstream pop' and 'commercially produced' music. I have tried to include as much research as possible, visiting Spain on several occasions, including the WOMAD festival in Caceres, Spain, twice. Check-out my website www.davidbalaam-books.co.uk for all the latest info on by books, and details of my second novel, The Letter, and my third novel, Nothing is Sacrosanct, which is available in paperback as well as e-reader format. I have started writing a children's book and hope to publish a non-fiction work around photography later this year (2106)
