Comical Modernity is the first book-length study on popular humour in late nineteenth-century Vienna. The research findings suggest that humour provided a significant means of interpreting and discussing modernity in an era of radical change. This book combines humour research with understanding of spatiality in an innovative way. It introduces an exciting source material that has not previously been closely studied and sheds light on the history of popular culture outside the Anglo-American world before 1890.
