Since the 16th century, the ceremony of crowning the image of the Blessed Virgin has been a solemn act charged with meaning, thanks to the fervor and devotion of the Capuchin Father Jerome Paolucci of Calboli da Forli. This pious Capuchin, in his missionary preaching, concluded with the moving crowning of the most venerated images, urging the faithful to divest themselves of the vanities of the world in order to honor the Virgin Mary. With the backing of the Vatican's Chapter of St. Peter's, the coronation ceremony acquired a universal character, giving way to the elaboration of a special ritual in the 17th century. This ritual, later included in the Roman Pontifical, transformed a manifestation of popular religiosity into a liturgical rite. Over the centuries, the Supreme Pontiffs have supported this beautiful tradition, crowning numerous images of the Virgin Mary in acts of deep devotion.

Autorenporträt

Monseñor Giovanni Lanzafame nace en Catania (Sicilia -Italia, 1954). Es licenciado en Sagrada Teología y especialista en Mariología y experto en el Barroco europeo. En el año 2000, con permiso del Arzobispo de Catania, se traslada a Sevilla para realizar investigaciones sobre 'temas Marianos' y es nombrado Capellán de la Hermandad de las Aguas en la Capilla Virgen del Rosario. Un año más tarde es nombrado Vicario parroquial del Sagrario de la Santa P. y M. Iglesia Catedral de Sevilla. Es autor de trece libros sobre temas marianos, sobre el barroco y la Semana Santa de Sicilia y de Sevilla. Además es colaborador de prensa religiosa en Catania y en Sevilla, entre ellos en las revistas 'Laos' y'Madre de Dios' o el Boletín del Consejo de Hermandades y Cofradías de Sevilla. Ha alternado siempre sus actividades pastorales y culturales mediante la predicación mariana, exposiciones, conferencias y charlas centradas siempre en los altos valores de la fe y de la piedad popular.
