Ed y Lorraine han convivido con lo sobrenatural desde su infancia. Su estrecha relación con lo paranormal los unió en cuanto se conocieron en el instituto, y desde entonces compartieron una vida dedicada a ayudar a personas que padecían a causa de fenómenos aparentemente inexplicables y a desenterrar la realidad bajo sucesos como las apariciones fantasmales, las posesiones... En 1952, fundaron la Sociedad de Investigación Psíquica de Nueva Inglaterra, el grupo de parapsicólogos más antiguo de Nueva Inglaterra. Desde Amityville hasta Tokio, han participado en miles de investigaciones y exorcismos sancionados por la Iglesia.
