Mary Hartwell Catherwood was an American writer, best known for her historical romances, short stories, and poetry. Born on December 16, 1847, in Ohio, she was educated at Granville Female College. Throughout her career, she published under her birth name, Mary Hartwell, and also used the pseudonym Lewtrah for some of her works. Catherwood s literary works often explored themes of romance and history, particularly focusing on the lives of women in different historical settings. Her stories were popular in the late 19th century and were well-received by readers who enjoyed her vivid depictions of historical periods and complex characters. Catherwood's works include novels, poetry, and short stories, with many of them set in the context of early American history. She was a prolific writer, and her works often reflected her deep interest in the dynamics of human relationships, the struggles of women, and the challenges of historical events. Mary Hartwell Catherwood passed away on December 26, 1902, at the age of 55, in Chicago, Illinois.
