The infolding of the dental papilla before biological mineralisation that allows the invagination of inner dental epithelium is described as Dens invaginatus, it's a rare developmental morphoanatomical variation. An anomalous defect, termed as "dens invaginatus" reflects the invagination of the outer portion(enamel) into the inner portion (dentin) with the formation of a pocket or dead space, this generally occurs before crown calcifications. The most commonly involved tooth is the permanent maxillary lateral incisor, but it may occur in primary teeth as well as in the maxillary and mandibular arches. It is simply an accentuation in the development of a lingual pit in most cases. Suggested synonyms for dens invaginatus are-' Dens in dente'due to the radiographic appearance of a tooth within a tooth.
