This thesis assumes that coming to terms with the past can also take place in feature films, as feature films can be used as a source for contemporary mentalities, i.e. for existing attitudes, thoughts, feelings and existing patterns of thought and behaviour within a society. The aim of this thesis is to use selected feature films to gain insights into how German society dealt with the past at the time of their creation and what stage this process had reached. Four selected feature films that deal with the subject of Hitler are analysed to determine the extent to which these films reflect contemporary mentalities and the contemporary approach to the Nazi past.
