Carlos Piera Gil (Madrid, 1942) is a poet, critic and linguist. He was a member of the Círculo Lingüístico de Madrid, together with Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio, Víctor Sánchez de Zavala, Agustín García Calvo and Isabel Llácer. He obtained his doctorate at UCLA with an unpublished thesis on Spanish metrics. He has been a professor of linguistics at Cornell University (Ithaca, USA) and retired from the linguistics department at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He was a member of the editorial board of the cultural journal La Balsa de la Medusa [Madrid] from its inception in 1987 until its closure in 2011.He is the author of four books of poetry: Versos (1972), Antología para un papagayo (1985), De lo que viene como si se fuera (1991) and Religio y otros poemas (2005). His poetry has been collected in a volume entitled Apartamentos de alquiler (2013), which includes individual poems not belonging to the previous books. He has published various essays, several of them compiled in two books, entitled Contrariedades del sujeto (1993) and La moral del testigo (2012).
