Diplômée en sciences sociales de l'Université d'État de Campinas, où elle a également obtenu une maîtrise et un doctorat en anthropologie sociale. Elle s'est consacrée à l'étude des relations raciales au Brésil, de la santé publique, des études sur la réception télévisuelle, des processus postcoloniaux en Afrique et de la sexualité.
