Ari Folman, cineasta afincado en Tel Aviv, escribió, produjo y dirigió el film de animación Vals con Bashir. Sus dos películas anteriores, Saint Clara y Made in Israel, recibieron numerosos premios de la Academia Israelí, entre ellos a la mejor película y mejor director por Saint Clara, la cual también fue galardonada con el People's Choice Award del Festival de Berlín en 1996. Asimismo, Folman produce y escribe para televisión, y de su serie In Treatment se ha hecho una nueva versión para HBO, uno de los canales de la televisión estadounidense de mayor audiencia.
