Als Dav Pilkey in der Grundschule war, bekam er viel Ärger, weil er ständig Streiche spielte, Witze riss und alberne Comics zeichnete. In der zweiten Klasse erfand er seinen berühmtesten (oder berüchtigsten) Helden, 'Käpt'n Superslip'. Davs Lehrer sagte zu ihm: "Du solltest dich besser auf was Ordentliches besinnen, junger Mann. Du kannst nicht den Rest deines Lebens damit verbringen, alberne Bücher zu schreiben!" Dav war kein besonders guter Zuhörer!
